Although submitted names such as "Bullets", "Nickles" and "Blue Devils" were suggested among the more than 4,500, the name "Buffalo Bills" which was submitted by James F. Dyson was selected. Dyson’s winnng essay compared the team to the legendary Indian Scout William "Buffalo Bill" Cody, who was a trailblazer of the American frontier.
