Before the 1970 merger of the American and National Football
Leagues, Bob Howsom was awarded an AFL franchise in 1959. The Broncos’
first decade as a team did not give their then-fans much to cheer
about. However, the teams’ fortunes changed in 1965 when their new
owners - Gerald and Allen Phipps - bought the team and the Broncos’ new
home, Bears Stadium. Excited fans nearly sold out the arena!

In 1968, the stadium was renamed Denver Mile High. The stadium
expansions went from 34,567 to 75,100 seats by 1977 and ticket sales
have filled every seat since then - with good reason.
The Broncos have won no less than seven AFL Western Division
titles
and AFL championships in the 14 year period between 1977 and 1991. How
about back to back Super Bowl championships against the Green Bay
Packers in Super Bowl XXXII and Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl XXXIII!
Only five other teams have ever achieved this feat.
