In 1945, Arthur McBride brought an AAFC team to Cleveland to find an appropriate team name. He held a newspaper contest and offered a $1,000 war bond to the contest winner. Most of the submitted entries wanted the team to be called the Browns after the teams’ popular coach Paul Brown - and so the Cleveland Browns were born.

Thus far, the Browns finest year which was a perfect one was in 1948 with 14-0 but the team had several near-perfect years as well: 1947 (12-1), 1949 (9-1), 1951 (11-1) and 1953 (11-1). The Browns were league champions in several seasons: 1946-50, 1954-1955 and 1964.

Midway thru the 1995 season, the team announced a relocation to Baltimore and became the Baltimore Ravens. Cleveland demanded a team and shortly thereafter the NFL granted Cleveland a franchise. The new team was also granted all rights to the Browns’ name, colors and memorabilia.
