The Kansas City Chiefs American Football League franchise
began on
May 22, 1963 when the franchise had relocated from Texas to Kansas City
and was officially named the Chiefs.
Their first game in Municipal Stadium, a 17-13 pre season win
over
Buffalo on August 9th of that year was marked by a tragedy when rookie
Runningback Stone Johnson suffered a serious neck injury and died in
the hospital ten days later. His jersey - number 33 - was subsequently
retired.

The team nearly achieved their ultimate goal in 1967,
dominating
Buffalo with dazzling offense and a smothering defense. The Chiefs won
the game 31-7. That victory propelled Kansas City into the first
AFL-NFL Championship game which was later re-named Super Bowl I.
Unfortunately for the Chiefs, Vince Lombardi’s Green Bay Packers were
too powerful for the Chiefs to overcome. Consequently, the Chiefs lost
the game 35-10 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

That same year on August 9th the Chiefs played Chicago at
Municipal
Stadium and romped to a commanding 66-24 win. This game was the first
to be played between AFL and NFL teams.
