The historic Baltimore Colts became history when the Colts
owner
Robert Irsay moved the National Football League franchise from
Baltimore to Indianapolis in 1984. The Colts have their roots in the
old Miami Seahawks of the All-American Football Conference. This
financially-battered team was purchased and relocated to Baltimore in

In 1950, the Colts became members of the National Football
League
after a merger between the AAFC and the NFL. After posting 1-11 records
two years in a row, the franchise was dissolved. The NFL’s Dallas team
franchise moved to Baltimore in 1953 but the franchise kept the Texas

The Colts won consecutive division titles in 1958 and 1959
defeating
the New York Giants on both occasions. Weeb Ewbanks’ ten year run as
Head Coach ended in January 1963 with his replacement by Don Shula. The
Colts, under the guidance of Coach Shula and the leadership of Hall of
Fame Quarterback Johnny Unitas led the Colts to eight team records -
and set a then-new NFL individual passing mark of 237 completions.
