It all started for the Dolphins on March 3, 1965 when an attorney from Minneapolis, Joseph Robbie, met with American Football League Commissioner Joe Foss in Washington, D.C. to discuss an expansion franchise in Miami. The AFL expansion franchise was awarded to Robbie and to entertainer and TV star Danny Thomas on August 10, 1965. Get your Miami Dolphins tickets today!

First round college draft choices were picked on November 27 of that year. Picked were Kentucky Quarterback Rick Norton and Illinois Runningback Jim Grabowski. The first Head Coach was George Wilson who had previously coached for the 1957 National Football League Champion Detroit Lions. The AFL merged into the NFL on June 8, 1965; the Commissioner was Pete Rozelle. The first Dolphin training camp was opened at St. Petersburg, Florida on July 5, 1966. The Dolphins’ first regular season game against Oakland was a disappointment. Oakland was 23-14 at Miami’s Orange Bowl Stadium. After nine straight losses (four in pre-season), the Dolphins beat Denver 24-7 for the first win in franchise history. Be sure to get your tickets for premier seats to see the Miami Dolphins.

Many consider the 1972 Dolphins as the best team ever. That year, the Dolphins became the only team in league history to have a perfect season. What an achievement that was! Unbeaten and untied, the Dolphins battled thru the toughest game of the year against the Minnesota Vikings. Under the coaching of Hall-of-Famer Don Shula, the Dolphins, trailing in the fourth quarter, overcame an eight point lead held by the Vikings. This all came about in the closing four minutes of the game, clinching their perfect season.
