In 1959, a charter franchise was granted to Harry Wisner, who named his new team the Titans. Wisner went right to work putting the team together. Notre Dame George Izo was the Titan’s first selection on November 22, 1959. Then came Sammy Baugh as Head Coach on December 18th. In 1960, the Titans gained access to the famed Polo Grounds for home games. It was decided the team colors would be blue and gold.

The first league game played by the Titans at the Polo Grounds was a win over Buffalo of 27-3 before an audience of 10,200 fans. The Titans ended their first season with an even win/loss split for 1960 of 7-7 in 14 games. Sammy Baugh’s coaching career with the Titans was cut short. The 1962 season saw Baugh’s replacement Clyde (Bulldog) Turner assume the helm.

The team’s owner, Harry Wisner, battled serious financial problems from the onset and in 1962, was unable to meet the costs of running the club until season’s end on November 8th of that year. The club resolved its financial problems when a five-man syndicate purchased the franchise for $1 million in 1963.

Released by Baltimore, Weeb Ewbank was named Head Coach and General Manager. That same day - April 15th, 1963, the team’s name was changed from the Titans to the Jets. Football legend Joe Namath was contracted by the Jets in January 1965 for a reported $427,000. The Jets concluded their first winning season with a win over Boston 29-24 on November 19th, 1967.
