The Detroit Lions came into being in 1934 when radio station
owner
George Richards bought a failed Ohio club called "The Spartans" and
moved the franchise to Detroit. The team was dubbed "Lions" in keeping
with the big cat image of Detroit’s baseball team - the famed "Tigers".
The Lions won their first championship on December 9, 1935
beating
the New York Giants 26-7 but the Lions really hit their zenith in the
1950's when their dominance in 1952 through 1957 resulted in four
Western Division Titles and three National Football League
Championships.

However, the team faltered over the next two decades. After
struggling thru many disappointments, a resurrected Detroit Lions team,
under the strong leadership of Coach Wayne Fontes, made a sensational
comeback in the 1990's. Star Runningback Barry Sanders recorded nine
consecutive 100-yard seasons from 1989 thru 1997 - and the Lions
reached the playoffs four times from 1991 thru 1995.

Back in 1952, the Lions won two consecutive NFL titles against
the
Cleveland Browns in 1952 and 1953. On Thanksgiving Day 1962, the Lions
handed the Green Bay Packers their only season defeat 26-14. And the
team’s accomplishments go on and on.......
