The Patriots became New England’s first pro football team in
1959.
On November 6th of that year, the American Football League awarded its
eighth and final franchise to a group of local business men led by
William H. Sullivan, Jr.
First draft choice of the new franchise was Northwest
University’s
running back Ron Burton. Syracuse running back Gerhardt Schwedes was

One of the first decisions was to get a name for the
franchise. It
was decided to run a public contest. Thousands of entries were
received. A surprising 75 individuals picked the winning name which was
the Boston Patriots. Boston University field, the former home of the
Boston Braves, was to be chosen as the first home of the new Boston
Patriots.

In 1963, the team moved to Fenway Park for home games and
claimed
their first Division Crown with a 7-6-1 record. Some of the first
Patriots stars were: Gino Cappelletti, Jim Nance, Babe Parilli, Nick
Buoniconti and Houston Antwine.
In 1970, Foxboro Stadium - later to be named Sullivan Stadium
in
honor of the Patriots’ owner - became the team’s new home. In March
1971, the team was renamed the New England Patriots. This exciting team
won the Super Bowl in 2004 with a 32-29 victory over the Carolina
Panthers.
