One of the most popular teams in the history of the National Football League, the Washington Redskins actually originated in Boston when in July 1932, a syndicate headed by George Preston Marshall purchased an NFL franchise for the city. Braves Field became the teams first home. It was also the home of the Boston Braves baseball team. The new football team was also known as "The Braves".

The next move for the team was to Fenway Park, home of the American League’s Boston Red Sox - and so the Braves Football Team was renamed "The Redskins".

A new history began for the franchise on February 13, 1937 when the NFL approved a transfer to Washington, D.C. and "The Redskins" became "The Washington Redskins".

The team’s first game in Washington, D.C. on September 16, 1937 was cause for celebration when nearly 25,000 fans saw them defeat the New York Giants 13-3. In December 1937, the Redskins won their first title. The legendary Sammy Baugh completed 11 of 15 passes and routed the Giants 49-14.

Nothing stopped Sammy Baugh. In December 1937, the Redskins won their first title chiefly due to his brilliant play completing 17 of 33 passes, beating the Giants 28-21. The victory meant a first World Championship for the team. On December 8, 1940, a day best forgotten by the Redskins and their fans, the team suffered one of the most crushing defeats in NFL history with a 73-0 loss to the rival Chicago Bears.
